Imo state Governor, Rochas Okorocha has given reasons why he dumped the All Progressives Grand Alliance(APGA) for the All Progressives Congress(APC), saying the party is ethnic-based.
Speaking at Mbaise over the weekend during the conferment of chieftaincy title on one of his commissioners, Dr. Iheanyi Nwachukwu, Okorocha explained that he left APGA because it had no capacity to win presidential election or head the National Assembly.
He admitted that APGA can win governorship election in any state in South East but not at national level.
His words: “There’s no way Igbo can become Nigeria’s president, vice president, senate president, etc in APGA. We know APGA can win governorship election but not at federal level”.
The governor, told the audience that his joining the opposition party had started yielding positive fruits, with his recent election as the chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum.
Okorocha maintained that APC was meant to better the lots of the Igbo race especially at national level, and urged the people to embrace the party.
The Governor further stated that the defection of the five PDP governors to APC had vindicated him, adding that with the votes of the two most populous states (Lagos and Kano) during presidential election, APC would coast home to victory against the PDP in 2015 elections.
He however, expressed optimism that more PDP governors and chieftains would officially defect to APC in 2014.
The Governor, declared that the ruling people’s Democratic party PDP, was now in total disarray and was now ready to hand over power to the APC, come 2015
His words: “PDP is now in total disarray because of the prayer of Nigerians against their years of misrule. Today, former president Olusegun Obasanjo is publicly fighting with the man he personally installed as the president.”
He told the people of Mbaise not to be deceived by the few board appointments given to a few people from the area by the PDP.
Governor Okorocha used the event to announce his plan to recruit 50,000 unemployed youths from his Imo Youth Must Work programme starting from January 2014.
According to him, those to be recruited would be paid basic salary by his government pending when they secure employment.
“This is very possible. I know PDP members will not believe it, but it will happen before all of them” he stated
