US Takes Responsibility Over Attack On Russian Army In Syria
Featured, Latest Headlines, World News Sunday, September 18th, 2016BALTIMORE, MD (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The US-led coalition Force has admitted its planes carried out the attack on eastern Syria in which Russian army claimed not less than 62 Syrian troops fighting IS were killed.
US indicated that its planes had halted the attack in Deir al-Zour when informed about the Syrian presence.
The US Central Command statement explained that the coalition believed it was attacking positions of the so-called Islamic State and the raids were “halted immediately when coalition officials were informed by Russian officials that it was possible the personnel and vehicles targeted were part of the Syrian military”.
The statement said the “Combined Air Operations Center had earlier informed Russian counterparts of the upcoming strike”.
“Syria is a complex situation with various military forces and militias in close proximity, but coalition forces would not intentionally strike a known Syrian military unit. The coalition will review this strike’’ the statement restated.
Speaking, a Spokesman for the US administration expressed “regret” over what was described as “unintentional loss of life”.
Consequently, an emergency meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, convened by Russia, is currently discussing the crisis which started in 2011.
Earlier, Russians alerted that the current ceasefire in Syria was in danger, while if it eventually collapsed, the US would be held responsible.
In the meantime, Russian Defence Ministry declared that if the US air strikes did turn out to be an error, this would amount to the US’s failure to co-ordinate her military action with Moscow.
