Tottenham Snatches Victory Against Man City In Premier League Opener
African News, Featured, Latest Headlines, Sports News Monday, August 16th, 2021(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Even without the services of their embattled striker Harry Kane, Tottenham Hotspurs overcame the firepower of Manchester city and defeated the league defending champions 1-0.
As usual City began the game with a barrage of attacks on Spurs goal but the London team stood firm with occasional counter attacks that unsettled Pep Guardiola’s men.
The breakthrough came in 54 Minutes in counter attack when Bergwijn drove the away side’s defence backwards before releasing Son out wide.
Ake goes out to challenge but Son cuts inside and fires a curling effort into the far corner with Ederson rooted to the spot.
All efforts by City to recover were fruitless as Spurs’ defence were up to all the venom poured at them by Pep’s men.
“We started really well and after 20 minutes, we allowed them (Tottenham) too much running in the transition, and it’s a team like Nuno did with Wolves,
“You see the same stats every time we come to Tottenham. We play well every game except the first (Mauricio) Pochettino game (in 2016) at White Hart Lane. It’s difficult to control them because of the transitions.” said Guardiola in his post-match press-conference.
In his reaction, Spurs new manager, Nuno Santo told Sky sports: “It was good. It would make any manager proud when they work so hard. They were strong [at the start] and I think we were lucky, because they had real chances, but the boys held on.
“We knew it was going to be tough, and after the first 15 minutes I think we controlled better. Not only Tanganga, in terms of shape, in terms of organisation, the front three worked very hard.
“It’s very difficult to play against City, it requires a lot of discipline, but the boys were great. I’m sure that with commitment and with the talent that we have, we’re going to be a good team. I’m learning every day, and I’m very proud of them today.”
The Premier League champions, City will look to bounce back next weekend against Norwich City as the Etihad stadium will be full for the first time in over a year.
