Threat On Emir Of Kano: MURIC Asks Security To Be At Alert
Featured, Latest Headlines Thursday, December 18th, 2014By Niyi Adeyi, Lagos – Following the recent threat of a looming attack by the leader of dreaded Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, against the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II, a non governmental Muslim organization – the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on government and security agencies to beef up watch on the prominent Northern monarchy.
MURIC in a press statement issued Thursday by its Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, urged the security agencies to take Shekau’s threat seriously, while the Emir’s palace should be made “impregnable”.
“By the same token, we see the need for the security agencies to be more proactive by providing adequate security for all top religious leaders in the country. This should include, at least, the Presidents and Secretaries of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA)” offered the group.
The organization which is reputed for its critical views on public and national issues, insisted that Boko Haram leader’s warning should not be neglected or considered “an empty threat”, especially against the background of the Emir’s comments – to the insurgents torrent attacks, that Nigerians should defend themselves against Boko Haram, a call which was followed by the bloody invasion of the militants on Friday, November 28, 2014.
Not less than 150 Muslim worshippers were killed in the attack, while many others injured.
The organization observed that the over three weeks attack confirmed how deadly Boko Haram has become, recalling the killing of other Emirs by the dreadful terrorists in the over five years insurgency.
The statement reminded the Nigerian security community that the latest threat by Boko Haram was a challenge to security agents, noting for terrorism to be defeated, the first rule was to ensure that they fail in their stated goals, adding that this was why the Nigerian security outfits must “give their all to ensure that they thwart all attempts made by the terrorists”.
MURIC also appealed to members of the public to cooperate with security agents in the fight against terrorism, saying terrorists were not ghosts.
“They live among fellow Nigerians. We charge patriotic citizens to give information to security agencies early enough to nip terrorists’ evil plans in the bud. Above all, every citizen must be on alert. Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty” it cautioned.
It would be recalled the controversial Boko Haram leader, Shekau in his latest video clip this week, threatened that onslaught on Emir Sanusi was the next task before it to execute.
