OWERRI, NIGERIA (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Management of the Federal prison, Owerri, Imo state capital, South- East Nigeria, has been thrown into confusion, following a jail break that occurred at the reformation facility Tuesday night.
AFRICAN EXAMINER gathered that two inmates who are still serving various jail terms in the prison escaped during the incident.
It was further learnt that the inmates escaped after scaling the fence of the prison.
The latest jail break is coming barely five months after 25 inmates escaped from the Nsukka prison in Enugu State.
The development has caused serious panic and fear in the prison quarters, especially among senior staff who are afraid that heads might roll if the convicts are not rearrested.
It was gathered that the inmates took advantage of the ongoing reconstruction work at the male section of the prison.
A staff of the prison who did not want to be quoted said “we believe that most of the male prisoners planned and facilitated the escape.”
Meanwhile, authorities of the prison AFRICAN EXAMINER also learnt had commenced a full scale investigation into the possible cause of the incident.
However, the State command is yet to make any official pronouncement on the issue, even as its Public Relations Officer PRO, James Madugba’s mobile phone was switched off as at the time of filing this report.
