Tension and anxiety have enveloped the entire Umungasi area of the commercial city of Aba, Abia State, following Wednesday’s killing of a student of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, by unknown gunmen.
Our correspondent reports that the student, whose name could not be ascertained as at the time of filling this report was said to be a native of Ndume Ibeku in Umuahia North council Government Area of the state.
However, the ugly incident is coming barely two months after a worker of the polytechnic from Umungasi, Umuahia North Local Government was also murdered in a cold blood near his father’s house within the city.
African Examiner gathered that the student was returning from school when he was accosted by a group of boys near Immaculate Avenue, off Aba-Owerri Road, which is few metres away from the polytechnic.
The assailants were said to have exchanged words with the deceased after which they opened fire on him, and immediately fled from the scene unchallenged.
Though, the motive of the hoodlums could not be ascertained but there were rumours in some quarters that the assassination may not be unconnected with cultism.
The student was immediately rushed to the Abia State Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba by some good Nigerians where he was confirmed dead and the body, deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
The state Police Public Relations Officer PPRO, Geoffrey Ogbonna, when contacted, confirmed the incident, saying efforts were in place to make sure that the culprits were apprehended.
