BALTIMORE, MD (AFRICAN EXAMINER)– Tennis investigators are still assessing allegation of a match fixing, at this year’s Wimbledon, after suspicious betting patterns were reported.
However, The Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), which was set up in 2008 to detect any corrupt act, is yet to reveal the particular match it is investigating.
Still, the Unit said it is investigating a US Open First-round matchbetween Vitalia Diatchenko and Timea Bacsinszky.
TIU hinted: “Both are the subject of routine, confidential investigation”.
The Unit informed that it received 96 alerts from July to September 2016, including two alerts from Wimbledon and the US Open.
TIU confirmed that alerts come from regulators and betting organizations, which can report matches, if they notice suspicious betting patterns.
“It is important to appreciate that an alert on its own is not evidence of match-fixing,” clarified TIU.
It added that the unusual gambling patterns could be established by factors other than fixing, such as incorrect odds setting, player fitness, playing conditions and well-informed betting.
