Tanzania Set To Swear In Suluhu As East Africa’s First Female President
African News, Featured, Latest Headlines Thursday, March 18th, 2021(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Tanzania is set to swear in Samia Hassan Suluhu as president of the East African country who became the first female vice-president after President John Pombe Magufuli was elected in 2015.
It reported the death of John Pombe Magufuli, who died of heart complications.
Tanzanian constitution states that, “Where the office of President becomes vacant because of death, then the Vice-President shall be sworn in and become the President for the unexpired period of the term of five years.”
The same would also happen if a vacancy happens due to resignation, loss of electoral qualifications or inability to perform his functions due to sickness or failure to discharge the duties and functions that the office deserves according to the section of the constitution.
After consultation with her political party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi, Suluhu will pick the name of the person who shall be her Vice-President.
The National Assembly shall then confirm such appointment by votes which should not be less than fifty per cent of all the Members of Parliament.
