Suspected Armed Robbers Killed Akure Diocese Church’s Bursar

(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Suspected armed robbers have allegedly killed the bursar of the Akure Diocese of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Mr. Gabriel Kola Abiodun.

It was gathered that the deceased was shot dead at the Diocesan office at Alagbaka, Akure, the Ondo State capital Thursday morning shortly after returning from bank with the money meant for the church.

His remains have been evacuated and taken to the mortuary by some policemen.

Security has been beefed up in the area just as sympathisers have begun to besiege the office.

Eyewitness account stated that the suspected robbers, who said to be three in number, followed the deceased from the bank to his office, where they collected the money, shot him and ran away.

“We saw three men in Toyota Corolla ash colour car, following him. Initially, we thought they were men of the state Police or DSS, but later when they brought out the gun, people knew who they actually were. Two followed him into the office and one stayed outside.

“We did not know what transpired between him and them inside the office, but all we know is that he was shot inside the office and they went away with the money.

“We rushed him to the hospital, but he did not survive it and he died before we reached the hospital. He has been working with us for the past eight years” said the eyewitness.

It was gathered that the money stolen from the deceased was over N500, 000. The sum was withdrawn from the bank to address some issues in the church.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, when contacted confirmed the incident and said investigations had commenced on it.

Joseph said, “The hoodlums followed the deceased from the bank to his office where they carried out the dastardly act. We are already on their trail. I want to give assurance that we will arrest them.

” I also want to use this opportunity to advise our people that anybody who wants to withdraw huge amount of money from the bank should always involve Police so as to prevent this kind of occurrence.”

While reacting to the incident, the Administrative Assistant to the Bishop, Venerable Blessing Aregbesola, who spoke for the Bishop of the diocese, Simeon Borokini, described the case as sad and unfortunate. He said the matter had been reported to the Police.

The state Police Command also confirmed that the remains of the deceased have been evacuated and taken to the mortuary by its operatives./The Punch
