Wenger Renews Interest In Khedira, Eyes Fabregas’ Return As Sagna Decides In June
- Updated: May 25, 2014
Arsenal are to revive their interest in Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira.
Arsene Wenger made enquiries about the German international during the January transfer window.
But the 27-year-old had suffered a serious knee injury last October and has only just regained full fitness.
However, club manager Carlo Ancelotti has been impressed enough with his recovery to start Khedira in Saturday’s Champions League Final against Atletico Madrid in Lisbon.
And Germany coach Joachim Low has been confident enough in Khedira’s fitness to include him in his provisional squad for the World Cup.
Wenger is aware that Arsenal have first option on Cesc Fabregas, should new Barcelona manager Luis Enrique decide to let the Spain international leave. But the fee would be in excess of £30million – and Wenger would find Khedira a more attractive financial option.
Khedira has only a year left on his contract at the Bernabeu and would cost only £15m.
Khedira is also a close friend of Mesut Ozil, bought by Wenger for a record £42m in last summer’s transfer window.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are ready to try and prise Cesc Fabregas away from Barcelona this summer.
The Spain international left for the Camp Nou in 2012, but the Gunners are looking to bring him back to the Emirates in what would be an emotional return.
Fans have inevitably been having their say, and we’ve rounded up the reaction of popular Arsenal fan sites and blogs following the news.
“There’s a gansey-load of Cesc talk and while I’d take him back in a heartbeat I just don’t really understand why Barcelona would let him go.
“With Xavi not getting any younger, and Alex Song just an injury away from being a first team regular, the idea of letting a player of his quality go makes no sense to me.
“Still, if they want to do it, I think we should bite their hands off. ‘Where would we fit him in?’, people ask. How about we cross that most interesting of bridges when we come to it.
“I mean, it’s not as if we have loads of players who get injured all the time whose absences cost us dearly so having super-quality across the squad would help us cope with that, or anything.
Defender Bacary Sagna has reportedly claimed that he will resolve his situation before the beginning of next month’s World Cup.
French football website Telefoot claim Sagna will decide his future in the coming weeks, suggesting his move to Manchester City could soon become official.
The right-back is reportedly due to join the Premier League champions on a three-year deal worth around £120,000-a-week.
Sagna is hopeful that his move will be completed before he plays for Les Bleus in the World Cup.
He will be a free transfer from Arsenal after he rejected offers to remain with Arsene Wenger’s men.
After bowing out with an FA Cup winners medal, the Frenchman could be set to end his seven-year stay with the Gunners.
