Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola admits he side was lucky to beat Arsenal 2-0 in their round of 16 match at the Emirates stadium after losing his two previous games at the venue.
The ex-Barcelona coach endured two winless visits with his former Spanish employers but expressed his delight after Wednesday’s triumph. After witnessing a first half with two missed penalties – one from Mesut Ozil of Arsenal and the other courtesy of Bayern’s David Alaba – and a red card, Guardiola watched his side dominate the second period.
Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller both graced the score-sheet as Bayern enjoyed 79 per cent of the possession and Guardiola concedes he was delighted to break his Emirates duck.
“Last year, Bayern had a better result and this year it is super, we are so happy,” he toldSky Sports.
“The last two times I came here with Barcelona, we played amazing and we didn’t win so I know how difficult it is to win here. “I accept, we played 10 against 11 so it’s easier that way and the red card was clear.
” With Arsenal reduced to 10 men following Wojciech Szczesny’s first-half red card, the Gunners were entrenched in their own half for the majority of the second period and Guardiola applauded his side’s persistence.
“When you see the second half and you see nine players in the box, it is not easy,” he added.
“It’s important that we controlled so well in this situation and we played with patience and found the goal.” “The last two times I came here with Barcelona, we played amazing and we didn’t win so I know how difficult it is to win here.”
Bayern returned to the Allianz Arena with a two-goal advantage over Arsenal at the same stage last year – having won 3-1 in North London before losing 2-0 at home – and only progressed virtue of the away goals rule, and Guardiola insists the reigning champions must avoid complacency.
“Last year Bayern had the better results but the last five or six minutes in Germany, it was terrible,” he admitted.
