United Struggle Reduces World Wide TV Interest And Audienece

Manchester United’s troubled season may be source of enjoyment for their rivals but it is worrying the money men at the Premier League.

The Red Devils are the star attraction for TV audiences around the world and their slump under David Moyes is hitting interest and ratings.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore admitted that United’s struggles this season have damaged the global appeal of the competition.

Speaking during a promotional visit to Johannesburg, Scudamore said: ‘It’s a double-edged sword. When your most popular club isn’t doing as well, that costs you interest and audience in some places.

‘There’s lots of fans around the world who wish Manchester United were winning it again.

‘But you have to balance that off against, generally, we’re in the business of putting on a competition and competition means people can compete.’

The Premier League are reported to earn around £2.23 billion from the sales of all their overseas rights to live games for the three-year period, 2013 to 2016, with Asia contributing the major share of £941m.
