United Breeze Past Norwich On Giggs’ Debut

Ryan Giggs took centre-stage at Old Trafford Saturday and had a dream debut as United boss as his charges breezed past Norwich City, beating the Canaries 4-0.

Giggs, 40, a veteran of 962 games as a United player, won his first as a manager with Rooney scoring twice.

Juan Mata added two more, the first just three minutes after coming on as substitute as United pushed Norwich closer to relegation. It is now eight away league defeats in succession for the Canaries but for United – and Giggs – there was the satisfaction of the biggest home league win of the season.

Man of the Match Rooney said: “Of course the players have got to take responsibility for what has happened to David Moyes.

“But we now have to finish the season well.

“We’ve had a tough week. There has been a lot of negativity towards us and we have been hurt by that.

“It was important to bounce back in this match.

“It was strange playing for Ryan but he’s experienced and built to be a manager.

“But it’s down to the board who the next manager is going to be.”

Giggs made a statement with his team selection, leaving out the sacked Moyes signings £27.5million Marouane Fellaini and £37.1m Mata, who started on the bench before coming on as a 60th-minute substitute.

United’s acting boss also recalled veterans Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic to the centre of defence.

And there was no place, either, for one of the brightest spots of David Moyes’ reign – Adnan Januzaj.

Giggs, who opted for club blazer and tie for his debut as a manager rather than tracksuit, was given a hero’s welcome by the crowd when he emerged from the tunnel.

But the United boss, assisted by class of ’92 team-mates Phil Neville,   Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes, saw Norwich get the ball into the net first.
