Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood has criticized his side after they suffered a 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Chelsea on Sarurday.
Sherwood says Spurs lacked ‘characters’ and insisted they have no chance of finishing in the Premier League’s top four if they cannot beat the top sides.
Spurs, who remain fifth in the table, have suffered five defeats in six against top-four clubs this season, and he admits that cannot continue if they want to make the Champions League spots.
“We aren’t going to finish top-four if you can’t beat the top teams. It ain’t going to happen, you’re miles away unless you beat the top teams,”
“You have to pick up some points. All right, we beat [Man] United and Everton around us, but you can’t rely on rolling over the smaller sides – it does not work out like that. We did all right in patches, but there are too many blips – you are talking about fourth, people at the club, but wake up.”
Spurs had performed well for the opening 56 minutes before matters turned on their head in west London.
Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is insisting that he is not thinking of the tittle, despite seeing his side move seven points clear at the top of the table after the victory over Spurs.
Mourinho would only concede that the Blues do have a top-four spot now “in their pocket” but insists that their next target was only to make sure they secure a top-three fin
“Clearly it is very, very difficult to not get a top-four position. They (Spurs) were the biggest threats to the top four.
“If we lose seven points now with nine matches to go… a lot can happen, but 13 points with nine matches is almost impossible for us to lose that, so from now our objective in the Premier League is in our pocket.
“Our next objective is top three, as that gives us direct qualification [to the Champions League group stages] and if at a certain point our distance to fourth is big, I will say we will think a bit more – but objective now is top three. If Man City win three games in hand, which they can – they are top.”
