Podolski scores a brace as Arsenal move to FA Cup 5th round
- Updated: January 24, 2014
Lukas Podolski scored first-half brace as Arsenal beat Coventry City to reach the 5th round of the FA Cup at the Emirates stadium Friday.
The German forward put the hosts ahead in the 15th minute from a Mesut Ozil pass and doubled the advantage 12 minutes later after fellow compatriot Per Mertesacker headed on a corner.
Record signing Metsu Ozil almost made it a third German goal for the Gunners towards the end of the game, but for the goal post.
Coventry improved vastly after the break and Leon Clarke hit the post but Arsenal substitute Olivier Giroud made sure of the win by adding a third with six minutes remaining after a Kieran Gibbs pull back.
In-form Spanish midfielder Santi Cazorla, who came in as a substitute scored the fourth from close range with a minute remaining after Joe Murphy could only parry a shot into his path.
