Manchester United Defender Chooses Arch Rivals As PFA Award Winner
- Updated: April 20, 2014
Patrice Evra has voted for Luis Suarez as his PFA Player of the Year.
The Manchester United defender has chosen his arch-enemy from Liverpool for one of football’s most prestigious individual honours despite the ugly race-row incident between the pair in October 2011 which saw Suarez banned for eight games and fined £40,000.
A dressing-room insider at Old Trafford said: “Suarez is an outstanding footballer, but no-one at United could believe it when Patrice voted for him.
“It shows the measure of the man that he didn’t allow what happened between them to cloud his judgement.
“He clearly doesn’t bear a grudge.
“He was named as one of six after being named in the six nominees after scoring 29 goals to shoot Liverpool towards an unexpected tilt at the title.
Suarez’s ugly clash with Evra came during a game at Anfield, when the Frenchman claimed he had been racially abused by Suarez.
The Liverpool striker failed with a plea that it was a misunderstanding caused by “cultural differences” when an FA disciplinary committee found him not to be a credible witness.
And the relationship between the two players deteriorated further when Suarez refused to shake Evra’s hand before United played Liverpool at Old Trafford in February 2012.
It is the second season running that Evra has voted for Suarez.
