Bayern Boss Confirms Toni Kroos New Deal. Says Moyes Needs To Win Trophy

Pep Guardiola has piled the pressure on David Moyes by insisting managers have to win trophies at the big clubs.

Guardiola sealed the German title with seven games to spare in his first season at Bayern Munich, while Moyes has taken champions Manchester United backwards seventh in the Premier League.

Although Guardiola expressed sympathy for Moyes and his current plight, the former Barcelona boss said coaches at the world’s major clubs have to be successful or risk the inevitable consequences.

Bayern have been an unstoppable force in the Bundesliga this season, dropping just six points in 28 games, en route to the 24th Bundesliga title in their illustrious history.

And ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final clash between the newly-crowned German champions and the soon-to-be-deposed English champions, Guardiola had a stark warning for the under-fire Moyes.

“In the big clubs when you don’t win, you are always in trouble,” said Guardiola. “You have to look forward and win games. Here, in Spain, in Italy, you have to win in the big clubs.

“Manchester United, in the last 10 to 15 years, dominated the Premier League and Europe too, arriving in many finals.

“In the big clubs that happens. It happened with Bayern – last year we won everything and you have to try to maintain that level and so far we did it, at least in the league.”

Moyes claimed he inherited an ageing squad from Ferguson and said even his predecessor would have struggled to make the current squad compete for trophies this season.

But Guardiola suggested it was a dangerous policy to blame Ferguson for supposedly leaving Moyes a squad unfit for purpose, given everything the former United boss did for the club.

“Football is special and many things are difficult to understand,” said Guardiola. “I don’t know how Sir Alex can have a bad experience for this club. This club is thanks to him. He put it to another level.

Guardiola had fresh misery for Moyes even before the encounter, confirming his belief that Bayern midfielder Toni Kroos will sign a new deal to remain with the German champions.

Moyes has scouted the £35million-rated midfielder several times this season but Guardiola suggested the United boss had been wasting his time with his pursuit of the Germany international.

“Toni has one year more on his contract and Toni will remain there,” said Guardiola. “I hope he can extend his contract and stay with us because he’s a very good guy and he loves this game.

“It’s not just a job for him, he enjoys to play football, and I would like him to stay. I spoke with the player, with the club and I gave my opinion. After that, I am not manager, I am just the trainer, so it’s completely different.
