Toure Hates To See A Repeat Of 2012 Last Day Tittle Drama
- Updated: May 5, 2014
Yaya Toure threw his head back in anguish and gave a rueful chuckle: “I don’t want to live through something like that again!”
He is talking about Manchester City’s last-minute title victory, when their dramatic win over QPR delivered perhaps the most memorable Premier League triumph.
But as much as he would love to cruise through the coronation of the Champions’ crown, he knows deep down that is not going to happen. With City, nothing is ever that easy – as this fraught victory proved.
Not only are Liverpool desperate to atone for their slip by taking the race to the finish line, but Chelsea are still lurking too. Toure could do without the drama.
“I don’t want to live through something like that again. We had QPR at home when it was almost too much for my heart. Going right to the last minute – it was unbelievable,” he said.
“I think the supporters would say like me that we don’t want to live through that again. I hope this time, in these two games, we can make a difference earlier and get the wins early.
“Aston Villa and West Ham are coming – we need to be ready. We need to be well prepared for these games and not make it as close as last time.”
The omens are not good. If victory over Everton was reminiscent of the win at Newcastle in 2012, when Toure scored twice to set up that incredible last-day finale, then there were subtle differences too.
For all their impressive firepower at Goodison, there were weaknesses too. Even watching from the bench in the final minutes was painful, as the subbed midfielder admitted.
“My heart – phew! This is why I have so much respect for the manager. You can have a heart attack when you are on the bench or when you are a manager.”
City are not playing with the confidence of champions and that suggests there could be even more twists in this remarkable season. But Toure believes the wobbles of 2012 will at least help them this time.
