The ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) in the South East zone, has lambasted the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, over his recent warning that revolution is imminent in Nigeria, should the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government fail to soften its ongoing stringent economic policies and style of governance.
The warning that if Mr. President’s fails to act on time might “lead to a revolution by Nigerians” was enough exposition of the sources of sponsored protests that are currently worsening the economic fortunes of the South-Easterners.
Ekweremadu, had during a recent south East Peoples’ Democratic party (PDP) zonal executive committee meeting in Enugu, warned that unless the APC led FG do something urgently about the present harsh economy, the development may stir up revolution in the country.
A statement signed by the south east zonal Publicity Secretary of the APC, Hon. Hycienth Ngwu and made available to AFRICAN EXAMINER in Enugu Thursday, condemned in its entirety, Ikweremadu’s inciting comments, saying it was uncalled for.
The statement read thus: “I read with utmost displeasure the advice to President Muhammadu Buhari on how to manage the Nigerian economy and the attendant repercussion should the President fails to heed the advice, credited to the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu”
“I am in doubt whether these statements were actually said by the Deputy Senate President. But if actually he did say them, I would take it that those statements should be discounted as disinformation and political propaganda aimed at drawing attention away from the fact of the matter at hand.
“The facts are that the Nigerian economy was in coma prior to May 29th 2015, the day Muhammadu Buhari was sworn-in as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“Today, the economy is regaining consciousness and would soon be healthy enough to correct the acute structural imbalances caused to it by the mismanagement of our common resources by the People’s Democratic Party’s leadership from 1999 to May 29th 2015.
“The fact remains that it was only in Nigeria, particularly from 2011 to 2014 period, that the government’s revenue was growing, and the poverty rate was also growing.
It added “The fact also remains that it was mainly in the South-East that contracts for Federal projects were awarded, money collected and the contract abandoned.
Ngwu continued, “The fact remains that physical infrastructure developments are drivers of economic growth and these were lacking in South East during the PDP’s 16 years rule in Nigeria, in spite of the zone’s ranking Federal Government officers during the period”.
According to the South east APC, it is also on record that “those who mismanaged our common resources and who helped to impoverish the over 112 million Nigerians should be ready to give accounts of the leadership positions entrusted upon them by Nigerians. That is the spirit of APC’s Change slogan.
It warned that the era of business as usual and crass impunity allegedly embodied in PDP’s philosophy “is gone and gone for good.
“These are the issues that must concern us more and not warnings and predictions of revolution.
“Our leaders must all come together to preach and predict reigns of peace in South-East and the Nation, these are the issues” the statement added.
