BALTIMORE, MD (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Some soldiers fighting Boko Haram insurgents in the North East of Nigeria have said to have manhandled the District Head of Gulak in Adamawa state, Muhammadu Bello Ijadi Sumda, beating him to a state of coma.
Eyewitnesses said on Saturday soldiers had molested some civilians an hour before the curfew time which is 6 pm, a development that necessitated the intervention of the district head who pleaded with the soldiers to exercise restraints.
Instead of buying the plea of the traditional ruler, the soldiers allegedly pounced on him, kicking him and beating him until he laid flat on the ground.
The beating angered his subjects who challenged the soldiers in protest. But it took the intervention of the community elders to calm the situation which could have turned violent.
An aide to the District Head who confirmed the incident said he believed the soldiers acted on orders because they knew his position as district head yet attacked him.
Efforts to reach the Army Authority in Adamawa over the incident proved unsuccessful.
