Society of Engineers Storm Plateau to Fish out Quacks

Worried by reports of collapse buildings and bridges across the country, and also the infiltration of quacks into the profession, the Nigerian Society of Engineers has taken practical measure to check the norms.

buildingThe team, led by Engr. Marfem Danladi Bongkat, is in Jos to undertake an assessment tour of various projects being executed in the State with a view to ensuring that all works meet specifications.

Addressing Senior staff of Ministry of Works during a courtesy call on the State Commissioner of the Ministry, Engr. Bongkat said the ongoing inspection of buildings in the country by COREN and ERM is to ensure that the team  tackle all  problems  associated with collapse building and to  check the activities of quacks.

He added that the right caliber of people and those that are competent should be giving construction jobs to handle.

“With the periodic check been conducted round, we test to identify the quality of job whether in the near future the bridge might likely develop problem so that the attention of the engineer will be drawn to it and also make sure that the job is giving to a register member of the body”, he stressed.

“We also check promotion, design, competency and quality design of site with professional requirement of the engineering firm handling the work.

“Government legislation also affect the challenges facing collapse buildings in the country ,we should make laws that will punish all those offenders by giving 20 years in prison or ban them from the practice completely for life”. He decried.

Responding, the Commissioner for Works in the State, Chris Hassan advised the engineering body to sanction any person who can’t deliver good work.

He said going by the reported cases of collapse building and poor job in the country by engineers handling roads construction, government will make the necessary measure to register more members in Plateau state.

“We are calling on the COREN to embark on harsh punishment measures by

monitoring and taking disciplinary action against the perpetrators, who fail to deliver quality job”. the Commissioner added
