Six Ekiti NMA Members Die In Auto Crash

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has lost six of its members in a fatal auto crash along the Abuja-Kaduna express way.

The sad incident was confirmed in a statement issued Monday and signed by the NMA National President and Secretary General, Dr. Kayode Obembe and Dr Akinwumi Alayaki respectively.

Afected members according to the statement were: Dr. Alex Akinyele, NMA Secretary, Ekiti State chapter; Dr. Tunde Aladesanmi, General Surgeon, Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti; Dr. O.J. Taiwo, Anatomic Pathologist, Ekiti state University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti; Dr. Ogunseye J.B, of the National Association of General and Government Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) and National Secretary, Hospital Management Board, Ekiti, Dr. Olajide .O, Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), EKSUTH President, Dr. Atolani Adeniyi, Secretary NAGGMDP, Ekiti State and Mr. Ajibola, NMA Ekiti driver.

Dr Obembe said other members of the delegates who survived the accident were in stable condition and receiving medical attention under the auspices of the Chairman of the Kaduna State NMA and his team.

The doctors were delegates from Ekiti state and were on their way to Sokoto state to attend the NMA Annual General Meeting/annual delegates meeting, when the accident occurred.

The association prayed for the souls of the departed eternal rest and directed all doctors to observe one week of mourning from Tuesday, April 26 to Tuesday, May 3 2016.

“Every doctor should put on black band on the left arm over white overall”, Obembe directed.

In the meantime, NMA has announced that the bereaved families have been contacted and arrangements are ongoing to convey the bodies of the Doctors back to Ekiti state.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has condoled with the President and the NMA over the loss of their members.

In a statement by the Director, Media and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Boade Akinola, Prof. Adewole prayed for the quick recovery of the survivors.

“Our prayers are that almighty God in his infinite mercy will give the family, friends and the entire members of NMA the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. To the survivors, our prayers are that they will recover soon and get integrated into their normal daily activities.

“The Federal Ministry of Health is in constant touch with the leadership of the NMA so that the survivors of the accident could get the best healthcare service.

“I am using this medium to thank the leadership of the NMA especially those at the scene of accident in Kaduna who were involved in the evacuation of both the survivors and the deceased” the Minister stated in his statement.
