ABUJA, NIGERIA (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – President Muhammadu Buhari has been advised to disband his Economic Management Team (EMT) and replace it with an “Emergency Ad Hoc Economic Team” as one of the measures to tackle the prevailing economic recession in the country.
Specifically, the President was asked to sack the Finance Minister, Mrs Kemi Adeosun; her Budget and National Economic Planning counterpart Senator Udo Udoma and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.
A Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye gave the advice in a statement he issued on the state of country Sunday.
The Emergency Team recommended by Melaye will comprise former Ministers of Finance; their Budget and National Planning counterparts; former CBN Governors as well as members from the academia with “deep knowledge of developmental economics to drive the economic revival programme.”
“The President must immediately transit from mere rhetoric to drastic but positive action to save the economy and Nigeria from total collapse. The hunger in the land is real, pervasive, widespread and debilitating for the poor masses.
“As I walk the streets of my constituency these days, I constantly harbour a foreboding that I could be stoned by my angry constituents for the failure of Mr. President to fulfill his campaign promises and expectations to Nigerians.
“Nigeria is tottering on a dangerous precipice, sliding perilously to a certain catastrophe if the current economic malaise is not halted immediately” the Senator alerted.
While sanctioning cabinet shake-up due to lack of capacity by some members to deliver on their mandate, the Kogi Legislator specified that Mrs. Adeosun; Senator Udoma and Emefiele should be sacked
Melaye who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja indicated it was now very clear to all discerning minds that the “President’s widely-acclaimed magical body language has lost its presumed aura and efficacy. His no-nonsense demeanor is equally neither instilling fear nor commanding respect and loyalty from among his cabinet members”.
In view of this, the Lawmaker stressed it was obvious that the time for “barking is over; now is the time to bite and boot out all those who have demonstrated, in the past several months, a crass lack of capacity to effectively carry out the functions of their office.”
The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Senator berated President Buhari’s Economic’s Team headed by his Vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo that the team’s decisions would not be and “has never been respected by the economic managers and the bureaucracy in Nigeria.”
