The Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi has identified poverty and unemployment as issues responsible for the high rate of insecurity in Nigeria.
The Governor noted this when the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr James Enwistle paid him a courtesy visit in Government House, Port Harcourt at the weekend.
He, however, challenged Nigerian leaders to urgently address the twin problems.
“Until we deal with the issues of poverty, wealth creation and unemployment, then we may not be able to solve the problem of insecurity”, Amaechi said.
He told the Ambassador that, “I am aware that you are leading a delegation on oil theft, I know how qualified you are to take up the assignment in one of the best countries in West Africa with all sorts of complexities that will unravel as you carry out the assignment. We in Rivers State will be delighted to work with you, and I remember that when I was Speaker, the US used to work around here in the state, but now, we no longer see them”
Ambassador Enwistle, however said his team was in the state to enlighten the people and also learn from them about the situation.
