Police Arrest Woman For Selling Her 3-month-old Baby For N1.5m

Police detectives in Delta State Friday arrested a 33 year old housewife, identified as Elizabeth Okolie, in Okpanam community, Asaba, for allegedly selling her three month old baby for N1.5 million naira.
It was gathered that the woman, who is a petty trader in one of the markets in the community, allegedly sold the baby girl when the purported father refused to accept the paternity.
The state Police Commissioner, Alkali Baba Usman who confirmed the her arrest to newsmen, said that his men acted on a tip off, adding that the woman was arrested on her way to Benin City, Edo state capital after she had allegedly sold the baby to an unidentified buyer for N1.5m.
According to Usman, upon interrogation, Elizabeth, made some useful statements to the police.
He said that the police detectives have gone after the buyer of the baby.
However, family sources, hinted that Elizabeth who is a secondary school drop-out, escaped with the man she claimed she had been married to, and got pregnant while living with him.
The Delta police chief, noted that she was arrested through useful information that the baby she delivered three months ago was sold to an unidentified buyer after a misunderstanding with the man she claimed to be her husband.
“We have made frantic efforts to bring the buyer to book and our men have gone after the buyer, while the woman is currently in our custody helping the police with investigation. Meanwhile, the man she claimed to be her husband denied paternity of the baby,” Usman told newsmen.
