Over Speeding Truck Rams Into Car Killing  Couple, Son

By IGNATIUS OKPARA, Awka – A Couple and their son on Sunday perished in a ghastly auto crash that occurred near the Anambra State Government House, Awka, along the Enugu Onitsha express way.
The accident, involved a truck and a saloon car which was destroyed beyond recognition.

Scene-of-the-crash-360x203AFRICAN EXAMINER  gathered that the couple, with their four children, were travelling back to their base in Enugu State after spending the weekend in their hometown Ukwu, in Anambra state.

Their father who was driving the vehicle, was identified as Mr. Ikechukwu Odinegwe.

However, an eyewitness account had it that the couple stopped to refill their car at a filling station at Agu Awka around 2pm, when a trailer on top speed rammed into their vehicle on their way out of the fuel station.

Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC and Passersby,  had to deploy every means to pull out  occupants of the completely damaged car.

While the couple and their first son were brought out dead from the vehicle, three of their children were in critical condition and were rushed to a nearby undisclosed hospital in Akwa.

“It was even a miracle that some people were brought out of the vehicle alive, considering the way the vehicle was mangled and the speed of the trailer” an eyewitness said..

“It was clear that the trailer’s brake failed, because the people around were flagging down the driver of the trailer to slow down but he continued speeding until this happened.”

Immediately the accident happened, the truck driver ran away for fear of being lynched.

Uche Eze, the Anambra state police Public Relations Officer PPRO, when contacted on the telephone, said he had not been briefed about the accident.

But Police officers at the scene of the accident, who do not want to be quoted in the print, said they would soon pass their report to their superiors.

It would be recalled that Anambra state Governor, Willie Obiano, had on June 3rd banned articulated vehicles from plying roads in the state during day time, owing to the fuel tanker accident in Onitsha that consumed at least sixty lives.
