Osun Assembly Orders Suspension of Lecturers’ Sack
Latest Headlines, News Monday, January 11th, 2016BALTIMORE, MD (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The State of Osun House of Assembly has ordered the authorities of the state-owned tertiary institutions to suspend the issuance of sack letter on some of the teaching and non-teaching staff of their institutions.
Speaker of the Assembly, Honourable Najeem Salaam who gave the directive at the inter-denominational prayers to commence the legislative business in the Assembly on Monday, said the exercise should be suspended until the Assembly is convinced.
The directive followed the reported issuance of sack letters on some of the lecturers who were engaged by the institutions and not by the government
The Speaker then summoned the officials of the Ministry of Education and the affected institutions to appear before the Assembly on Tuesday to rob mind together on the issue.
According to him, it is important to ensure the investigation into the matter by the Assembly and be convinced.
“Recently, there have been news about the sack of lecturers, but instruction have been given to the House Committee on Education that the Permanent Secretary in charge of Education, Director in charge of tertiary institution, the provosts, rectors and their registrars, the chairmen of the governing councils in state-owned tertiary institution must all be in the Assembly on Tuesday to rob mind as to the issue of sack letter.
“Henceforth, the institutions have to suspend that action until the House is convinced about the need for the sack of lecturers”, Salaam said.
Noting that there are issues with the education sector in the state, he said it was high time every stakeholder face the tasks as a matter of duty.
Meanwhile, the speaker said the Assembly would deliberate frankly on issues relating to local government reform, revenue generation, identification and plugging of leakages among others in the new year.
Noting that the state and Nigeria as a whole is in a critical period, he said the Assembly would show more commitment to its legislative business to better the lots of the people.
The speaker, who urged all stakeholder to tighten belt and ready to make sacrifice and face reality, he said the support of everyone for the government is the panacea for breakthrough.
