One Policeman Crushed To Death, Two Injured By Truck In Anambra

Tragedy struck on Wednesday in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra state, South East Nigeria, as a truck loaded with sand rammed into three mobile policemen and crushed one of them to death, while the two others sustained various degrees of injuries.
The sad event occurred at New Tarzan Junction, along the deplorable Enugu/Onitsha expressway, Nkpor, Idemili North council Area of the state.
AFRICAN EXAMINER gathered that the incident happened when the tipper driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure.
The affected policemen were said to be involved in traffic control because of the festive period.
According to sources, tragedy occurred as the truck driver was descending the hill.
Our Correspondent further learnt that the driver of the tipper was immediately arrested, and he is currently being detained at the Ogidi police station while both the injured and the deceased were taken to the Iyienu Hospital and mortuary.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer, (DPO), Mr. Hassan Musa, confirmed that only one policeman lost his life in the tragedy, while two others were hospitalized.
He added that the driver is currently in police custody, just as the DPO expressed regret that the unfortunate incident happened at a time people were expressing satisfaction that no fatal accident/robbery has been recorded during this festive period in the area.
Musa hinged the crime-free Christmas celebration to the concerted efforts of Anambra state Governor, Willie Obiano, the police, under the watch of the state Commissioner, Mr. Karma Horsea, as well as other security agencies in the area.
