Ondo Elects First Female Speaker

Ms Jumoke Akindele, representing Okitipupa Constituency 2 in the Southern Senatorial District of the Ondo State on Tuesday emerged first female Speaker.
Akindele emerged with a total of 13 votes, defeating two other contestants, who are both men.
The two contestants, Oyebo Aladetan from Ilaje Constituency 2 polled 9 votes, and Soji Akinkuolie had no vote.
Akindele, who is a first timer in the House is a legal practitioner and hails from Okitipupa in Okitipupa Local Government Area of the State.
The Deputy Speaker, Emiola Dare from Akoko South West Constituency, who has been acting as Speaker, presided over the election.
In her acceptance speech, Hon. Akindele, appreciated the Labour Party; the State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko; members of the House and the people of the state.
She promised to be diligent, just and committed to the cause of peace, harmony and development of the state.
The swearing-in ceremony for the new Speaker comes after the demise of the erstwhile Speaker, Samuel Adesina in February 2014.
