Obama Hails Ethiopia Over War Against Insurgency
African News, Featured, Latest Headlines Monday, July 27th, 2015The US President Barack Obama’s visit to East Africa continued Monday with commendation to the Ethiopian Government on coordinated fight against the al-Shabab militant group and call for improvement on Human rights record.
While describing Ethiopia as an “outstanding partner” in the anti-terrorist war, President Obama after audience with his host PM Hailemariam Desalegn, indicated that the Ethiopian troops had played a key role in taming the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab group in Somalia
The visiting Obama urged PM Hailemariam to improve Ethiopia’s record on human rights and good governance.
President Obama at a joint press conference in the capital Addis Ababa, by him and his host, PM Hailemariam, declared that he didn’t bite his tongue with respect to human rights related issues.
Obama described the Ethiopian government, as “democratically elected”, having won overall parliamentary seats in the country’s general elections which held in May.
In the meantime, some human rights groups have criticized President Obama’s visit and faulted endorsement of the sitting government already being accused of brutality against journalists.
