BALTIMORE, MD (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – As the immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan raised death threat alarm against him by the Movement For Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and former Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio, have denied allegation of funding the raging Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).
Special Assistant to Wike on Electronic Media, Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, urged Nigerians not to give any credit to the allegation, hence ignore the list, which also comprised the name of former President Jonathan and prominent Ijaw Leader Chief Edwin Clark.
The Senate Minority Leader Akpabio, replied that the accusation was baseless, “reckless and senseless”.
In a statement issued weekend by his SA on Media Mr. Anietie Ekong, the opposition PDP Chieftain denied that he has “no link with the Niger Delta Avengers or any other militant group for that matter”.
While reacting through his Lawyer, Mr. Dotun Sowemimo , Chief Clark who is an ally of former President Jonathan the allegation was an attempt to undermine the efforts of the Niger Delta leaders to bring true and lasting peace to the region.
Others alleged as Avengers sponsors include the ex-militant leader and wanted Government Ekpemupolo aka Tompolo; the Chairman/CEO of AIT, Chief Alegho Raymond Dokpesi; Kingsley Kuku; Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson; Former PDP Spokesman, Olisa Metuh; Kimi Angozi and former NIMASA Director General, Patrick Akpobolokemi.
Virtually all those who were indicted have differently reacted and denied any link to the NDA and their activities who have continued to wreck havocs to the oil facilities in the Niger Delta region and lately extended them to other parts of the country, especially the South West.
Former President Jonathan last weekend accused the embattled Niger Delta warlord Henry Okah of plotting to assassinate him.
Okah is currently facing trial over alleged act of terrorism, as he was accused of masterminding the 2010 Nigerian Independent Day Anniversary at the Eagle Square Abuja.
