OGUN, NIGERIA (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The outgoing Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun has failed to deliver his political puppet, Hon Adekunle Akinlade as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Monday midnight declared the Governorship candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Prince Dapo Abiodun, as the winner of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Abel Idowu Olayinka, who announced the final result at INEC office, in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital announced that Prince Abiodun polled a total of 241,670 votes to defeat his arch-rival and candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Akinlade who polled 222,153 votes.
The result according to Prof. Olayinka puts the margin between the winner and the first runner-up at 19,517 votes.
The Returning Officer also announced that Gboyega Nasiru Isiaka of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polled a total of 110,422 votes; while Senator Buruji Kashamu of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 70,290 votes, and a former Speaker House of Representative, Dimeji Bankole of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) scored 9,666 votes.
The results declared showed that out of the 2,375,003 voters registered, only 708,807 were accredited during the election, while the total valid votes was put at 680,947, leaving total rejected votes at 20,969 votes were rejected during the election and 7,100 votes were cancelled in some polling units across the state.
The result also showed that the APC won in 11 LGAs, APM won in 6 while ADC won in 2, just as PDP secured victory in 1 LG area.
It would be recalled that the Director General (DG) of the APM campaign organization Mr. Sharafa Ishola has declared Sunday that his party and its candidate, Akinlade rejected the results being collated as the exercise were allegedly being manipulated.
Recall that AFRICAN EXAMINER a published a comprehmsive ANALYSIS – focusing on the factors that would likely determine the winner and odds against the losers. In the piece, the defeated Governor’s candidate (Akinlade) or the eventual winner (Abiodun) were projected to emerge victorious.
Gboyega Isiaka, although, considered strong, yet, not largely favoured, and (perceived more as a votes splinter) while Senator Kashamu was considered as a spoiler. Also, Hon Ladi Adebutu failed to add significant value to APM performance in the Ijebu side of the State.
