Lawmaker Condemns Enugu Herdsmen Attack, Tasks Security Agents To Unmask Perpetrators

ENUGU NIGERIA (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Members of the South- east caucus in the Federal House of Representatives, have condemned in strong terms Thursday attack on Attakwu community, Enugu State, by Fulani herdsmen and called on the Federal Government (FG) and security agents to ensure that the perpetrators are unmasked.
The community which is in Nkanu West Council Area of Enugu State was invaded in the early hours of Thursday by some suspected Fulani herdsmen, who killed a seminarian of the Catholic Church, Mr. Lawrence Nwafor and wounded several others.
Addressing residents of the area which is part of his Nkanu East/ West Federal constituency, during a sympathy visit a member representing the Area Dr. Chukwuemeka Ujam, described the act as barbaric.
The Lawmaker, who was accompanied by his colleague, and Member Representing Enugu East/ Isi Uzo Federal constituency, Dr. Kingsley Ebenyi, the legislator said he was in the community for a spot assessment, as well as to get first hand information on the sad incident.
“We are here to see things for ourselves, concerning the dastardly act that happened yesterday to my people. I am particularly pained because my people are peace loving people and do not deserve this unwarranted and provoked attack”
He said the South east caucus of the lower chamber of the National Assembly (NASS), is deeply worry over the incessant attacks of communities in Enugu State, by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
While appealing to youths of the area to remain calm and not to embark on a reprisal attack, Ujam urged FG and security operatives to ensure that the invaders were apprehended.

Before visiting the wounded victims at the Mother of Christ Catholic hospital Enugu, the legislator, had earlier paid a courtesy call to the Traditional Ruler of Attakwu, Igwe Greg Ugwu, who urged the NASS to as a matter of urgency do something about the Fulani herdsmen menace in Nigeria.
Meanwhile, the Enugu State Police Command says it has arrested one of the suspected masterminds of an attack.
In a statement issued Friday by the State Police public Relations officer (PPRO) Mr. Ebere Amaraizu the Command said one of the suspects had been arrested.
According to him, the “Nigeria police force in its resolve towards unmasking those behind the dastardly act perpetrated at Ndiagu Attakwu community of Akegbeugwu in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State in the early hours of 25/8/16, which left one person dead and four others critically injured, have nabbed a suspect identified as one Umaru Isah from Gusau Zamfara State over his alleged involvement in the incident.
“His arrest came through intelligence information gathered.
“The said suspect, who claimed that he is 20 years old, revealed that he came in from Gusau Zamfara State to Enugu recently for the purposes of rearing cattle, but has none to rear till now.
“Investigations have commenced in full scale into his nefarious activities with a view to unmasking his gang members so that they can be brought to book.
“The state Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Ojukwu has vowed to unmask all those involved in the dastardly act and bring them to book.”
