How Security Operatives Killed IPOB’s Commander, Others In Imo Joint Operation


(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – Tension has enveloped parts of Imo state, South- East Nigeria, following the killing of six members of the Nnamdi Kalu, led proscribed indigenous peoples of Biafra IPOB, in Imo state on Saturday.

Police operatives and their counterparts from the Nigerian Army and Department of State Services DSS, had during a joint operation gun down the IPOB leader known as Commander Ikonso  and five other militia members of the pro Biafra  group.

African Examiner reports that the incident occurred few hours after unknown gummen attacked the country home of Governor Hope Uzodinmma, in Omuma, Oru East Council area of Imo state where they killed some security Operatives guarding the building, as well as razed down the house and several vehicles in the compound. 

The deceased, who were identified as members of IPOB, were eliminated during an early morning raid on their hideout at Awomama village, in Oru East Council Area of Imo State.

Reports has it that three policemen and one Soldier sustained various degrees of serious bullet injuries during the exchange of gunfire with the insurgents and are presently receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility in Owerri.

A senior security personnel who do not want to be quoted in the print alleged that the slain IPOB members were behind recent  attack on the Imo State Police headquarters and the Nigerian Correctional Service  facility on April 5, 2021 during which several vehicles were set ablaze, and about 2,000 inmates unlawfully  released by the attackers.

He further accused them of masterminding several, violent attacks on security personnel and formations in the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones of Nigeria.

He said as the security forces approached the base of the insurgents, they came under rapid fire from the group. In a bold response, the joint security forces fought back gallantly.

According to the source, the security operatives overpowered and eventually neutralized the overall commander of the group in the South-East popularly known as Commander Ikonso and six other armed fighters of the insurgent group.

Imo state police command spokesman, Orlando Ikeokwu, could not be reached, as his mobile phone was saying switched off as at the time of filing this report.
