House Probes Ebonyi House Of Assembly Fire Incident
Latest Headlines, News, Politics Thursday, February 26th, 2015Ayodele Afolabi, Abuja – The House of Representatives Thursday mandated its committee on police affairs to investigate the burning of the Ebonyi state House of Assembly by unknown arsonists on February 24.
This resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved by Hon. Linus Okorie (PDP/Ebonyi), urging the House to direct the inspector-general of police to investigate the fire disaster and bring the culprits to book.
Ruling on the motion after it was unanimously adopted, Speaker Aminu Tambuwal directed the House Committee on Police affairs to probe the fire incident and report back to plenary in two weeks.
Moving his motion, Hon. Okorie said the incident occurred at a time when the legislative and executive arms of government in Ebonyi state are entangled in political crisis.
While drawing attention to the massive destruction of the assembly complex and the attendant implications for operations of the state legislature, the lawmaker however, expressed alarm that the state legislators were pointing accusing fingers at Governor Martins Elechi and key functionaries of his administration of masterminding the arson.
He therefore prayed the House to urge the state governor to ensure sustainable peace and order in the state ahead of the 2015 general elections.
Also, Hon. Okorie appealed to the House to encourage members of the Ebonyi legislature to remain steadfast in the discharge of their legislative duties.
