Group Declares War On Corrupt South-East Leaders, Says Culture Of Impunity In The Land Must Stop

FROM IGNATIUS OKPARA, Owerri

Disturbed by the alarming spate of corruption and insensitivity of political leaders towards the plight of Nigerians, a civil society organization, ” Say No Campaign South East”, has declared war against impunity and corrupt leaders in the five states of the South East zone.

The organization, warned that henceforth any leader in the South-East geo political, zone found guilty of the ignoble act would be blacklisted.

Group coordinator, Mr. Emeka Ononamadu, who spoke to newsmen Monday in Owerri, said as a response to the growing decadence in governance and protection of citizens in a democracy, the body,  is poised towards ensuring that henceforth, leaders from the zone who  indulge in impunity, corruption and human right violation  do not get away with it, just as he  vowed  that the organization would make things difficult for leaders who fail  to comply with the best principles of  good governance.

Ononamadu, who also expressed worry over the  lackadaisical and non challant  attitude of the  South East on issues of  national importance and their implications on the lives of the people,  denounced the use  of thugs by politicians  to cover impunity and also to use  same to determine the livelihood of the masses while making it difficult for them to freely elect their leaders.

The human right crusader decried  the continued docility and indifferent attitude  of leaders which he said  had enthroned a culture of conspiracy, marginalization and short changing of the entire  South East in the nation’s scheme of things.

He  stated that his organization which is a platform for Nigerians committed to fighting corruption, impunity poverty, violence  and other governance challenges in the country builds the focus of its campaign around the twin issues  of corruption and impunity especially as it manifest in the presidential pardon  granted to corrupt public officers.

The organization according to him, will not rest in its oars, until some corrupt leaders in the south east are thought some bitter lesson, so as to serve as a deterrent to others.
