FRSC Confirms 53 Burnt To Death In Benin-Onitsha Auto Crash

BENIN, EDO, NIGERIA (AFRICAN EXAMINER) -The Edo state Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Friday confirmed that a total of 53 people were burnt to death in a ghastly auto crash that occurred on Thursday night at Abudu town along the busy Benin-Agbor-Onitsha Express road.
According to the Command, eight vehicles, including a motorcycle, popularly known as (Okada) were involved in the road mishap.
A statement issued by the Command Friday, revealed that five other persons sustained various degrees of injuries and had been taken to the undisclosed hospital for medical treatment.
It listed the vehicles involved in the crash to include, 2 commercial Toyota Hummer buses, 1 Dyna truck, 1 tanker conveying petrol, 1 Ford bus as well as 1 Toyota Corrolla car.
“Everyone in the two hummer buses, Toyota Sienna, and Corolla car burnt to ashes” the statement added.
The Command however, blamed the accident on break failure which led to explosion from the petrol tanker.
“Health workers from Orhiomwon local government council Area where the mishap happened had been invited to take charge of the mass burial of the victims, the statement disclosed
Our Correspondent gathered that security operatives and officials of FRSC watched helplessly as the victims burnt to death as there was no fire service station at Abudu, the headquarters of Orhiomwon council Area to rescue the victims.
Meanwhile, the Edo state Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr. Samuel Olukoya, has led other top senior officials of the organization to the scene of the ugly incident with a view to getting first hand information about the crash.
