EXCLUSIVE – Brothel Demolition: Enugu Prostitutes In Solidarity Strike With Colleagues In Anambra

By IGNATIUS OKPARA, Awka – Commercial Sex workers in Enugu state, South- east Nigeria, have concluded plans to embark on strike next week, as a way of showing solidarity to their over 2000 colleagues in Anambra state who were recently rendered homeless by government.
The governor Willy Obiano led administration in Anambra, had last monday demolished several brothels where the sex workers live and do their immoral business.
AFRICAN EXAMINER recalls that the Anambra state government had rendered homeless over 2000 prostitutes, operating in the area, as the
State Urban Development Board (ASUDEB) destroyed more than 50 brothels were the prostitutes operates from.
The demolition exercise, which took place mostly at the popular cattle market, Amansea, in Awka North Council Area of the State, almost suffered a set back as the sex workers, revolted against the action which they described as “unfair”
Our Correspondent reports that the Anambra State Urban Development Board rounded up the place with over 50 armed policemen, before pulling down the brothels, which the government, alleged were being used as hideout by kidnappers.
After the demolition, the prostitutes were latter sighted boarding taxis to Ugwuoba in Oji River council area of Enugu State, where they reportedly operate in another brothel.
However, as a way of showing solidarity to their affected colleagues, over the development, prostitutes in Enugu
said they have concluded plans to shut their doors against their esteemed customers from next week.
A source close to the state chapter of the Association of Nigerian Prostitutes, (ANP), who craved anonymity, told AFRICAN EXAMINER on Friday in Enugu that the proposed strike may begin tuesday next week.
Also speaking, one of the sex workers, who simply identified her self as Stella, said “what the Anambra state government did to our sisters on monday at Amansea, in Awka, was not good, it was pure wickedness.
“After all, if those girls stop to do Ashawo job, will government provide them job to take care of themselves and their families” Stella asked.
“Let me tell you bross, some of us are graduates, and we are into this prostitution business because we don’t have any alternative, you know, there is no job in Nigeria”,
“The only way to stop us from doing this job is for governments to rise up to their responsibilities of creating jobs for its unemployed youths”
The sex worker, who claimed to be a graduate of secretariat studies from one the polytechnics in the South- East states, declared that “what the so called governor Obiano, did was man inhumanity to man, and height of wickedness.”
