Ex-Minister Of Foreign Affairs Gbenga Ashiru Dies At 66
Featured, Latest Headlines Sunday, November 30th, 2014Lagos—Olugbenga Ashiru, who as the minister of foreign affairs laid emphasis on economic diplomacy, died Saturday. He was 66.
Ashiru died in South Africa, where he has been receiving treatment.
A sibling of the deceased, Honourable Bimbo Ashiru, confirmed the death of the former minister.
Speaking with Per Second News over the phone on Saturday night, the Commissioner of Commerce in Ogun State, said that “Yes, we lost him”.
Ashiru’s economic diplomacy resulted in the rise of Nigeria’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to $8 billion in 2012. During that same period
foreign direct remittance from Nigerians abroad also rose to $21 billion.
