Ekweremadu Foundation Splashes N38.5m Scholarship, Bursary Award On Indigent Students

(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The joy of over 300 less privileged indigent students from Enugu state South- East Nigeria, at the weekend, knew no bound, as they received a total of 38.5 million naira for their scholarship and bursary awards from Ikeoha Foundation, a non-Governmental Organization founded by the Deputy President of the Nigerian senate,
Chief Ike Ekweremadu.
The lawmaker, who represents Enugu West senatorial district at the upper chamber of the National Assembly, NASS, said the gesture is part of his empowerment programmes for underprivileged youths who cannot afford to pay their school fees in various institutions of higher learning in Nigeria.
African Examiner reports that application for the scholarship award was thrown open to first year students in universities in Nigeria only, while application for bursary award was thrown open to students in penultimate and final year in polytechnics and universities in Nigeria.
A breakdown of the list shows that eighteen of the students from different institutions received four hundred thousand naira (N400,000) as scholarship each, while three hundred {300} indigent students received forty thousand {N40,000} each to support their education.
Speaking at Udi council headquarters, Enugu state, during the Ikeoha Foundation Adult Literacy Day and 2016/2017 Scholarship and Bursary Award Ceremony, Ekweremadu said though the cost of financing the programmes was becoming worrisome, he would continue to appeal to God to provide funds.
While appreciating those that have have continued to contribute to the success of the event, the Deputy Senate President of Nigeria assured that he would continue to do his best to sustain the programmes as part of efforts to support education.
The Deputy senate president, thanked the almighty GOD for making the event a success and for
providing the resources for the foundation to thrive.
He described the Foundation day that features many activities including spelling bees, cultural dances, match past, recitations, among others by the Adult Literacy Students of the foundation as a very important day for him and Thanked God for enabling to stand for hours to participate in the programme every year.
Ekweremadu said since the society has been nice to him, he believes that the event was one of the ways to give back and reassured that he would continue to give back to the society through the event for the
good of the people.
The lawmaker, while emphasizing on the importance of education, said he could not have gotten to the stage he is in the society without education, adding that they want to show that that it will never be late to go to school.
He congratulated the young boys and girls that benefit from the bursary and scholarship and advised them to make good use of the opportunity.
Ekweremadu further assured that they would continue to support indigent students that are brilliant despite their economic situations in their homes and encouraged the beneficiaries to go back to school and prove themselves.
Responding on behalf of others one of the beneficiaries, Akagworow Cynthia Ukamaka, expressed appreciation to Ekweremadu and prayed God to continue to bless Ekeremadu.
He, however, promised that with the financial assistance, they would do their best in their academics in their various schools.
