The Ebonyi state police command has arrested an indigene of Amasiri community in Afikpo North council Area of Ebonyi State, identified as Mr. Ikiri Okugo for allegedly inflicting severe machete cuts on a police officer (name withheld).
Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO of the command, George Okafor who made this known to newsmen in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital, said the incident happened when the Command office in Afikpo got a distress call of a clash between some groups in the area.
He said “the Area Commander instructed the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, of the area to investigate the matter as the police discovered that the group had escaped.”
According to him, the team visited the traditional ruler of the area who took them to the home of the prime suspect and knocked at door while announcing its presence.
The PPRO said: “Okugo who is the father of the alleged kingpin opened the door and descended on an officer, knocking him down and inflicting on him deep machete cuts in the process.”
He noted that other officers swooped on him and took him to the station as they discovered that other groups had clashed at a bar belonging to one Mrs Esther.
“They destroyed Esther’s property and escaped by the time the officers arrived, as we cannot establish any case of cult clash and death because we did not see any corpse,” he said.
The PPRO, noted that the matter is being investigated at the police headquarters in Abakaliki.
