Diplomatic Breach: China Grouses Over Trump’s Call to Taiwan President
Latest Headlines, World News Saturday, December 3rd, 2016BALTIMORE, MD (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – The Chinese foreign Ministry has announced that it has lodged a complaint with the US after President-elect Mr. Donald Trump called and spoke on phone with the Taiwan’s leader
The state news agency Xinhua reported that, China has urged the US “to cautiously, and properly handle Taiwan issue to avoid unnecessary disturbance to Sino-US relations”.
However, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi dismissed the call as a “petty trick” by Taiwan.
While China considers Taiwan as a breakaway province, the US policy set in 1979 cut all formal relations with it.
Mr Trump’s transition team said he and Tsai Ing-wen noted “close economic, political, and security ties”.
US is Taiwan’s most important ally and provides it with sufficient weaponry to defend itself.
Mr. Trump tweeted Friday claiming that Ms Tsai called to congratulate him on winning the US election.
His team corroborated and said the President-elect had also congratulated Ms Tsai on his election as Taiwan President last January.
It should be noted that no US President or President-elect has spoken directly to a Taiwanese leader for decades.
