Exclusive: Constitutional Crisis at INEC as Tenure of Acting Chairman Zakari Expires
Exclusive Reports, Featured, Latest Headlines, News Thursday, July 23rd, 2015Ayodele Afolabi, Abuja – Amina Zakari, the acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC is in constitutional crisis as the tenure her tenure as National Commissioner ended on 21st July, 2015.
As at press time, Zakari has not bowed out fueling concern that rule of law is being trampled upon.
An All Progressives Congress, APC chieftain who spoke on condition of anonymity said that from 21st July, she ceased to be a member of INEC unless the senate approves another tenure for her.
“She ought to have handed over to the most senior National Commissioner who will continue to carry on the function of acting chairman.
“What is happening in INEC is not only unconstitutional, but it is like setting a bad precedent.
“Recall that this is supposed to be era of change from impunity. But for her to continue in that office a day longer may give impetus to what the opposition PDP has been saying.
“The President must make haste and appoint a substantive INEC Chairman by following the laid down constitutional procedure or direct Zakari to hand over to the most senior National Commissioner”.
