The Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders (CACOL) has deplored the disruption of the much-publicised colloquium organised by the Executive Secretary, Anti-Corruption Network, Otunba Dino Melaye by some men of the Nigeria Police in Abuja on Tuesday.
The heavily-armed policemen, allegedly acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Abubakar, stormed Nicon Luxury Hotel, venue of the colloquium and sealed off the building.
Reacting to the news, the Executive Chairman of the Coalition, Comrade Debo Adeniran affirmed that the country is gradually heading towards anarchy. He said, “The present democracy is not what Nigerians fought for many years ago. It is very unfortunate that the present government has reduced democracy to a curse in this country. We are gradually degenerating into anarchy because of the level of impunity the police now exhibits. A country whose leadership does not value the opinion of its citizens is definitely heading into destruction.
The cumulative disregard for the rule of law and citizens’ welfare in the last 13 years of democracy by the politicians and their allies is mostly responsible for the anarchy pervading this country which is evidenced in the proliferation of militant groups in almost every region of the country. The ease with which the federal government uses the police for political and personal reasons is so unfortunate.”
The human rights activist however stated that the police recklessness is becoming embarrassing to the nation and stressed the need for people to speak up.
“This recklessness of the police has no place in the 21st century. The time has come for the FG to address the excessiveness of the Nigerian police. There is urgent need for well-meaning Nigerians to speak up to condemn these anomalies”, Adeniran said.
