Cleaning of Ogoni land: House Showers Praises on Buhari
Featured, Latest Headlines, News From The State Thursday, August 6th, 2015Ayodele Afolabi, Abuja – House of Representative has commended President Mohammed Buhari on his decision to implement the reports of the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP)to clean up the despoliation of Ogoni environment and other Niger Delta Communities polluted by oil exploration activities of the region.
This followed a motion by Kinglesy Chinda Ogudu,(PDP RIVERS) that the federal government has failed to implement the UJEP reports four years after the report was presented to government for execution and implementation while the people of Ogoni land wallow in pains.
The House in a voice vote adopted the motion and urged the Federal Government to declare the Ogoniland an environmental disaster zone and invest resources to tackle the environmental disaster in Ogoniland, adding that federal government should commission an environmental Audit or assessment of the entire Niger Delta region.
In his submission,Chinda, prayed that the federal government should ordered shell petroleum development company (SPDC) and other oil exploration companies in Niger Delta region to carry out a joint environmental pollution Audits of the area operation come up with a recommendation plan and forward an interim reports to the House for further legislative action.
He stressed that the neglect i of the UNEP reports has led to several protests by local communities and some civil society groups such as the Movement for the survival of ogoni people()MOSOP), Ogoni solidarity forum(OSF).
The lawmaker, however,adopted the motion and refer the matter to House Committee of compliance when constituted for further legislative action.
