Chelsea Midfielder, Mikel Obi Emerges New Super Eagles Captain
Latest Headlines, Sports News Thursday, March 24th, 2016Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has been announced as the new Super Eagles Captain.
The interim Captain and striker, Ahmed Musa, made the announcement Thursday, at a press conference in Kaduna. He also handed over the Captain’s band to the new team head.
The development occurred about 24 hours to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier match between the Super Eagles and Pharaohs of Egypt Friday at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, in the ancient city of Kaduna.
Musa at the handing over, admitted that Mikel as the longest serving player of the team, deserved the position.
In his acceptance address, Mikel thanked Musa, saying: “It takes a man to do what he has done, so I commend him” (Musa).
Mikel admitted Friday match would be a though one, still, promised they would do their best to win.
The acting Super Eagles, Coach, Samson Siasia, expressed delight on the development and subsequently announced Musa as the Vice Captain of the country’s senior squad.
It would be recalled another long serving member and former first goal keeper of the team, Vincent Enyeama was relieved of his post, by the immediate past Chief Coach of the team, Sunday Oliseh. The duo parted due to altercation which occurred due to Enyeama’s late arrival to the camp.
