Barely 24 hours after the state government directive for closure of all the state courts, sequel to violence that broke out on Monday and Thursday at the venue of the Election Petition tribunal, Ekiti state has been embroiled in another civil disturbance as hoodlums thronged the streets of Ado Ekiti, the state capital Friday morning and wrecked havoc on the residents.
The miscreants who were believed to be agents of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) stormed the state capital and invaded campaign office of the outgoing Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi as well as the secretariat of the state All Progressives Congress (APC).
The rage by the political thugs may not be unconnected to the killing last night, of the former state Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mr. Omolafe Aderiye. The slained unionist was a loyalist of the state Governor- Elect, Mr. Ayodele Fayose.
Aderiye was killed by the unknown gunmen in Police uniform, at Ijigbo vicinity of Ado Ekiti. The gunmen, about four, reportedly accosted and shot the former Chairman at a close range, after the close of work. He was allegedly fingered in the attacks on judges on Monday and Thursday at the High Court 3 in the state capital.
Meanwhile, the State Police Command has confirmed the early morning violence and damages. Its Spokesperson, Olu Babayemi, stated the hoodlums stormed Ado Ekiti town and touched some offices, including Governor Fayemi campaign’s office and state secretariat of APC.
