OGUN, NIGERIA (AFRICAN EXAMINER) – An undergraduate of Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has been shot dead while another one, Abisoye Taiwo, of the department of Forestry and Wildlife Management (FWM), was stabbed during the students’ protest Thursday against porous security within and around the campus.
Sources in the campus told AFRICAN EXAMINER that the students Thursday morning carried out peaceful protest against the school authority and police lukewarm attitude to security lapses on campus and around.
It was gathered that the situation has resulted to series of armed robbery operations in which the students mostly fall victims.
They complained despite persistent complaint to the police and school authorities, as well as heavy bill they pay on security, nothing was done.
Instead of looking into their plight, the students alleged that the police are fond of storming their hostel halls in search of Yahoo boys and collection of tolls from the popular okada riders.
Following the commotion, the school Senate has ordered the immediate closure of the school.
While the protest raged, sporadic gunshot by the police who stormed the campus rented the air and protesting students ran for safety. In the process, many students were injured.
It was also gathered that the Vice Chancellor Church bus was set ablaze during the protest.
Also it was gathered that the VC on behalf of the Senate has declared 7 day mid week semester break from Thursday August 18, 2016. He also ordered the students to vacate their resident halls today latest 6pm.
