Less than 48 hours after newly elected council chairmen were sworn in, with Riyom producing the only female chairperson, 10 people are reportedly killed on Tuesday night in Gwong and Gwarim, and many houses razed, all in Rim District of Riyom LGA of the State, when unknown gunmen attacked their villages.
A source told African Examiner that the incident occurred late on Tuesday night, when unknown gunmen stormed the village and started shooting sporadically and setting houses are ablaze.
The source said 9 people were killed from a family of ten in Gwong village,
while an aged woman also died in Gwarim.”They were burnt beyond recognition and have been given a mass burial”. He stressed sorrowfully.
Confirming the incident, the member representing Riyom Constituency and Majority Leader in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Daniel Dem, described as “sad and barbaric” the constant killing of innocent villagers.
He lamented that, it’s unfortunate that despite the presence of men of the Special Task Force responsible for the maintenance of peace in the area the attackers still perpetrated the evil and still escaped.
African Examiner gathered most of the residents of the affected villages have fled their homes for fear of another attack.
When the Police Public Relations Officer of the state’s command, DSP Felicia Anselem, was contacted, she confirmed that there was an attack in some villages in Rim District and also confirmed that 9 people were killed.
