Anambra Women Group Inaugurated In Enugu
Latest Headlines, News Across Nigeria, News From The State Sunday, November 6th, 2022(AFRICAN EXAMINER) – A female Socio cultural group, under the platform of ‘Anambra Women General Assembly’ (AWGA), has been formally Inaugurated, with a vow to seek end to issue of discrimination against non- Indigenous women by governments in South East geo political zone of Nigeria.
The group frowned at a situation where qualified and sound Women with capacity to deliver if given the opportunity to serve are completely excluded from appointive and elective positions by those in Authorities in parts of South East states, on the basis that they are not indigenes of such areas.
To this end, AWGA, said it would soon embarked on advocacy visits to the five governors of South East States, with a view to urging them to always consider and take qualified women in their states along in their scheme of things, irrespective of place of origin.
Speaking during the inauguration held in Enugu, weekend, Founder/president of Organization, Ambassador (Mrs), Amaka Nweke, explained that the new group which has been registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), is made up of Women born, or married into Anambra state.
She said: “We decided to come together because we feel there is need to protect Anambra Women. We feel that there is need to preserve our culture, or heritage”
“We also feel there is need to deepen unity amongst us, and that we owe responsibility to Anambra state and to Ndigbo in general.
According to the Founder of the group, coming together, will make their voice to be louder and stronger, adding that it would also give them sense of belonging where ever they reside
“We equally feel that coming together as a group will help us propagate our culture, a culture that distinguishes an Anambra Woman from others. Anambra has a distinct culture that you may not get in others part of the world.
“Anambra Women General Assembly (AWGA), is born as a socio cultural and political group. Today’s inauguration will formally signpost our long cherished desire to contribute to the development and growth of our dear state.
Mrs. Nweke, a social Crusader and worker, noted that there are many Anambra Women in different states of Nigeria and diaspora, and “these women are excluded from the scheme of things, even when they may be born at their place of abode, grew up there, study, work, do businesses, pay their taxes and contribute to the other developmental activities.
She further posited that such act is “unfair, unjust, and a denial of sense of belonging. We therefore, think that time has come for Anambra Women to stand and assert their rights, this is to guarantee the future of our children, spouses, relatives and friends residing in those areas
“We want to promote good governance and inclusion in all aspect by standing for what is right” stressing that the Organization would continue to advocate for the wellbeing and inclusion of non -indigenous women, youths, and men in political and governance system of the state they reside in Nigeria.
“This is to enable us achieve a just and egalitarian society for all. This is our vow. Our slogan or ‘Motto remain Total inclusiveness for all.
“Going forward, we shall pursue an Anambra state that is peaceful, United, progressive, and coexist in other states.
“We shall promote the health of women and children of the state, advocate against sexual and gender based violence, human/ illicit trafficking and drug abuses among our people.
Nweke, equally said the organization is going to promote the rights and privileges of Anambra Women and children, promote education/ mentorship/skill acquisition/ empowerment programmes for Women and youths.
The AWGA boss, also Announced that the organization would promote the Igbo language and values in schools and among her people as well as advocate access to clean water and sanitation hygiene WASH, amongst others.
